The written Japanese Kanji letters are as same as Chinese traditional Han-zi letters, however they are also popular written as Bai-Guo(白果) or Gong-Sun-Shu(公孫樹,公孙树) among the Chinese languages.
We have three different pronunciations for same letters among Japanese languages ....
Ichou or Icho or Ichoh(銀杏)... "Ginkgo bilolba" tree(s) in Japanese pronunciation. (pronounce somehow like "E-Chow")
Ginnan or Gin-nan(銀杏)... "Ginkgo bilolba" female tree's seed(s) in Japanese pronunciation. (pronounce somehow like "Gin-Nan")... Gin of GINZA, Nan of none ...
Ginkyo or Ginkyou(銀杏)... "Ginkgo bilolba" tree's leaves and female tree's seed(s), but particularly indicates Crude (or natural or herbal) drugs (or medicines) in Japanese pronunciation. (pronounce somehow like "Gin-Kyo")... Gin of GINZA, Kyo of KYOTO ...
Those written Kanji letters are exactly same but the meanings are different, as the first pronunciation indicates tree-itself or trees-themselves, while the second one indicates particularly "the edible seed(s)" ... like fruit(s) and nut(s).... , and the last one indicates particular drug or medicine ....
Crude (or natural or herbal) drug (or medicine) ... wiki ... [link]
By the way, How do you tell the difference between male and female Ginkgo trees ???
Here is the scientific answer ... Science Links Japan ... [link]
